FAQs
Does a Forklift licence mean you are competent to operate a telehandler / manitou?

No! Forklifts and Telehandlers have different characteristics and capabilities. Having a Forklift Licence does not mean you are licenced to operate a Telehandler.

There are many types of attachments on a telehandler - forks are just one type of attachment. Operators who have a Forklift High Risk Work Licence LF will not understand the limitations and capabilities of a telehandler. The stability of a telehandler can be affected by boom angle, boom extension, load weight, longitudinal and lateral slope.

Is a WP High Risk Work Licence needed if I'm operating a telehandler with a work platform?

In Queensland, if you are operating a slewing or non-slewing telehandler of any rated capacity, which is fitted with a work platform. and the boom length exceeds 11m, you need a WP High Risk Work Licence.

Is a Manitou a telehandler?

A Manitou is a manufacturer of telehandlers. Other brands of telehandler include Genie, JLG and Caterpillar.

If I have the unit of competency RIIHAN309F Conduct telescopic materials handler operations, can I operate any telehandler?

No! Remember, the licencing requirements for telehandlers differ based on the capacity and attachments:

  • a non-slewing telehandler over 3 tonnes rated capacity and fitted with a crane jib lifting attachment requires a High Risk Work Licence (CN class or above)

  • a slewing telehandler any rated capacity, and any attachment, requires a High Risk Work Licence (C2 class or above)

  • a slewing or non-slewing telehandler any rated capacity, with a work platform attachment and a boom length over 11m requires a WP High Risk Work Licence

RIIHAN309F - Conduct telescopic materials handler operations is nationally recognised training for the following configurations:

  • a non-slewing telehandler up to 3 tonne rated capacity fitted with fixed or rotating forks, earthmoving bucket, crane jib/hook, work platform (when telehandler boom length is less than 11m), or any other attachment

  • a non-slewing telehandler over 3 tonne rated capacity with fixed or rotating forks or earthmoving bucket

Where can I find out more about Queensland requirements for Telehandlers?

The Telescopic Handler Association Australia has information about operator competency requirements in each State/Territory according to capacity and attachment combinations in the Licensing and Training Requirements Matrix.

WorkSafe Queensland, responsible for issuing High Risk Work Licences, has information about "multi-purpose tool carriers" (powered mobile plant fitted with a non-slewing or slewing superstructure with a boom) on their When don't I need a [High Risk Work] Licence? page.
